A translation is compared against the source text. Main points being checked are possible translation errors and omissions, grammar and orthography, consistency in terminology and style.

Review/editing

The target text only is examined, independent of the source text. The main focus here is on the readability and fluency of the text and its suitability for the agreed purpose.

Review is often considered part of editing or referred to as such. The term editing tends to be used when further, often more creative steps are required and the editor has more freedom to make improvements to the text.
